What to look for

Changes worth getting assessed.

  • Receding hairline
  • Crown thinning
  • Increased shedding
  • Gradual diffuse thinning
  • Confidence affected
  • Family history
  • Shedding after stress or illness
  • Previous treatment that stalled

Not all hair loss is pattern hair loss. Thyroid conditions, nutritional deficiencies, medications and stress can all cause shedding, and they are treated differently. A practitioner reviews your history to work out which you are dealing with.

If treatment is suitable

The options a practitioner may consider

Evidence-based medications that may help slow hair loss and support regrowth. Which of them applies, if any, is a clinical decision.

  • Finasteride

An oral medication that reduces DHT, a hormone linked to pattern hair loss in men.

    • May help slow hair loss
    • May support hair retention
    • Taken once daily
    • Prescription required

Side effects are possible and are reviewed with you.

  • Minoxidil

A topical solution or foam applied to the scalp that may help stimulate follicles.

    • Applied to the scalp
    • Available as a solution or foam
    • Used once or twice daily
    • Prescription required

Consistent daily use is what the evidence is based on.

  • Combination therapy

Using more than one medication together, where a practitioner judges it appropriate.

    • Targets more than one cause
    • Personalized to your assessment
    • Monitored by your care team
    • Prescription required

    Not recommended for everyone.

These are prescription medications with potential side effects, and treatment is not suitable for everyone. A licensed practitioner determines eligibility and the plan. Results take time: most men who respond see changes over three to six months of consistent use, and full results may take up to twelve.

Frequently asked questions

Hair loss questions

How long before I see anything?

Hair grows slowly. Where treatment works, most men see changes after three to six months of consistent use, and full results may take up to twelve months.

Will the hair loss come back if I stop?

Usually, yes. These medications manage an ongoing process rather than curing it, so stopping generally means the loss resumes. Your practitioner will explain what that means for you.

Are there side effects?

Both finasteride and minoxidil have possible side effects. Your practitioner reviews them with you before anything is prescribed, and a pharmacist is available for questions afterwards.

Why do you need photos?

Pattern, density and the shape of the hairline are what a practitioner needs to see to assess eligibility and to have a baseline for tracking whether treatment is doing anything.

Can I use these alongside other treatments?

Sometimes. Tell your practitioner about everything you are using, including over-the-counter products and supplements, so interactions can be checked.

Is this covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan and by province. Your pharmacy receipt can be submitted to your insurer, and our team can tell you what documentation you need.
